How to Make Your Campervan More Comfortable | 7 Easy Upgrades

There’s a reason we love campervans.

Pack a bag, load up the van and suddenly a weekend away, a night by the coast or a road trip across Europe is possible.

But while campervans give us freedom, they don’t always give us the same comforts we enjoy at home.

The good news? A few clever upgrades can completely change how your campervan feels.

Here are some of our favourite ways to turn your campervan into a home away from home.

1. Start with a bed you actually want to sleep in

If there’s one thing worth getting right in your campervan, it’s your bed.

Rock & Roll beds, RIB beds and other campervan seating systems are fantastic for making the most of limited space, but once they're folded flat, the joins and contours that make them great seats aren't necessarily ideal for sleeping on.

After a few hours, those ridges can start to feel very noticeable.

Adding a supportive campervan mattress topper creates a much more comfortable sleeping surface and helps cushion the harder sections and joins underneath.

At NAPS, our campervan mattresses use dual-foam technology, combining supportive reflex foam with a viscoelastic memory foam comfort layer.

Because waking up feeling like you've slept in the van shouldn't mean waking up feeling like you've slept in a van.

2. Make bedtime quick and easy

When you've spent the evening around the campfire or enjoying a few drinks outside the van, the last thing you want is a complicated bedtime routine.

Keep your sleeping setup simple.

A fitted sheet designed for your campervan mattress can stay securely in place without excess material getting bunched underneath you.

Pillows and bedding can be stored together during the day, while mattress straps and storage bags can make packing everything away much easier.

The quicker your van can change from daytime mode to bedtime mode, the better.

3. Create a cosy atmosphere

A campervan doesn't need to feel basic.

Small touches can make a surprisingly big difference.

Warm lighting, cushions, blankets and soft furnishings instantly make the space feel more inviting.

Add a few things that remind you of home and suddenly you're not simply sleeping in a vehicle – you've created your own little space wherever you decide to park.

And that's one of the best things about campervan life.

Your view might change every night, but your little home travels with you.

4. Keep everything organised

Space is precious in a campervan.

The difference between a relaxing trip and constantly moving things from one side of the van to the other often comes down to storage.

Give everything a home.

Use storage bags, seat organisers, packing cubes and under-seat storage to keep everyday items out of the way.

Think about what you actually use on every trip too. If something has travelled around in the van for six months without being touched, you probably don't need it taking up valuable space.

Less clutter means more room to relax.

5. Don't forget the pop-top

If your campervan has a pop-top roof, you've effectively got another bedroom upstairs.

But it needs to be comfortable.

A thin sleeping surface over a hard pop-top bed board can quickly become uncomfortable, particularly around your hips, shoulders and back.

A supportive pop-top mattress can transform that space and make it somewhere adults or children are genuinely happy to sleep.

The NAPS Pop-Top Mattress combines supportive reflex foam with a memory foam comfort layer, providing extra cushioning while still being designed with the limited space available in campervans in mind.

Just remember that every pop-top roof and conversion is different, so always check your available dimensions and clearance before choosing a mattress or planning to store it inside the closed roof.

6. Make the van work for your adventures

There isn't one perfect campervan setup.

A family heading away with two children will need something completely different from a couple disappearing into the Highlands for a week.

Think about how you actually use your van.

Do you need more storage?

A better downstairs bed?

A more comfortable pop-top?

Somewhere for muddy walking boots?

Easier bedding?

Better blackout blinds?

The best campervan upgrades aren't necessarily the most expensive ones. They're the things that solve the little annoyances you encounter every time you go away.

7. Make a good night's sleep part of the adventure

It's easy to spend thousands upgrading wheels, awnings, kitchens, lighting and accessories while continuing to sleep on an uncomfortable bed.

But sleep affects the whole trip.

If you're waking up stiff and tired after a poor night's sleep, you're not going to enjoy the next day's walk, drive or adventure nearly as much.

A comfortable bed turns your campervan from somewhere you can sleep into somewhere you actually want to sleep.

And when you've found an incredible campsite, closed the doors for the night and settled into a comfortable bed, that's when your campervan really starts to feel like home.
